Preschool Playgroup

Gold Coast Down Syndrome Organization encourages our preschool families (and those who have children ages 2 to 7) to participate in the Special Olympics Young Athletes Program. We give you all the information here. Our families report that this is a great activity for the entire family. There is a registration process, but the program is on-going each Saturday of the month so you can sign up at anytime during the session. Parents and siblings can get involved and it is a great physical development activity for our youngsters with Down syndrome...not to mention another opportunity to connect with other families. Preschool aged children in our organization also participate in our project, The Learning Program, which meets once a month during the school year and teaches families how to teach their children with Down syndrome basic reading, math and handwriting skills to help prepare them for Kindergarten.  Preschool families are encouraged to attend our annual Summer Picnic and Holiday Party as well as other group sponsored activities. Check our calendar for more information.

Special Olympics Young Athletes™ Program

Now, young children with Intellectual Disabilities can run, jump, kick a ball and play just like all the other kids through our Special Olympics Young Athletes™ Program. This family involvement sports play program focuses on the physical, social, intellectual and developmental needs of children ages 2 -7. The Young Athletes™ program provides a variety of physical activities such as coordination, basic motor skills, balance, running, and catching as well as developing sports skills and sports play. It is also designed to help families grow, develop and realize potential together. Sessions are divided by basic skill level and ability.

Dates: Saturdays, January 9 - May 22, 2010
Location: CMAA Therapeutic Recreation Complex Gymnasium, Lake Worth

Class size is limited; pre-registration required.

School-based Young Athletes™ Program

Young Athletes™ programs can be conducted by teachers in the school for pre-K and elementary school children ages 2 -7 with intellectual disabilities and inclusive classes. Special Olympics Palm Beach County will provide hands on training, a sports play equipment kit, children’s T-shirts, and participation ribbons. This program can help meet several of the Sunshine State Standards of Education and voluntary pre-K Education Standards.
