The Buddy Walk® was established by the National Down Syndrome Society in 1995 to promote awareness, acceptance and inclusion of individuals with Down syndrome and to celebrate October as National Down Syndrome Awareness Month. The Gold Coast Down Syndrome Organization Buddy Walk® in Palm Beach County, held in Haverhill Park, was one of the first of 17 walk locations across the United States in 1995.

Over the years the Buddy Walk® has grown locally and nationally. In 2009, the Palm Beach County Buddy Walk®, now held in John Prince Park, had 2000 attendees and raised $110,000 to support local programs for individuals with Down syndrome. Over 75 teams and hundreds of individual participants walked to show their support for a loved one or friend with Down syndrome. For Gold Coast Down Syndrome Organization, the Buddy Walk® is an amazing opportunity to reach out to the community with our message; see the potential, see that people with Down syndrome can and do achieve. Community awareness opportunities allow us to celebrate the abilities of all individuals with Down syndrome. The Buddy Walk® is also an organization fundraiser that allows us to raise the dollars that support Gold Coast Down Syndrome Organization throughout the year.

Participants can Buddy Walk® the one-mile Advocacy Walk or the 5K Fitness Walk. It is a wonderful, heart-warming event that celebrates the many accomplishments of people with Down syndrome. Teams are formed, banners are made, and everyone comes out for a great day of family fun. Buddy Walks® create positive awareness, increase visibility of people with Down syndrome, strengthen collaborations between local support groups and organizations, and build family connections. Whether you have Down syndrome, know someone who does, or just want to show your support, come and join us at this year's 2010 Buddy Walk® on Sunday, October 17, 2010.
